Are conversations real ?
Of course conversations are real. What do you think we’re having right now?
You’re just imagining it. There only messages going to and fro. Any attempt to group some of them as a “conversation” inherently arbitrary and meaningless.
It seems pretty natural to me. You have people that get together at some time, and they have a conversation, then they leave.
Yes, but that all changed with modern technology. Now people can send messages to each other even when they are not together, via the telephone. Even less like a conversation, people can send messages to each other at completely different times – in the extreme case, people can read messages in books, messages written by people who are long dead, and respond by writing new books.

It cheers me to see this. It’s a good subject, it’s a good idea, and I have things to say. There are treasures to be found here.
Just not now… Not with me right now, at least…
But thank you…

That’s a conversation.
DocumentsVsMessages: At a sufficiently large scale, entire books and movies are messages, sent from one part of a populous to another part.
The participants of the conversations are entire populations of people who are thinking particular ideas.
Of course, this depends on: AreGroupsReal. Or perhaps it’s rather, “Are populations real,” or: “Are ideas real.”
Are ideas real? We know that if two people share an idea, that their individual constructions, their individual attached connotations, all the other different things- that they are different. And yet we all learn the same mathematics, and there are times where ideas spread like wildfire, or are independently reached by a great many people (thus rendering a “movement,”) and so on.
I suspect that ideas are real, groups are real, relationships are real, conversations are real, and so on.
I’m glad wiki allow people to have a conversation even when there is no one time that all of them can meet. If it takes a year before this seed of a page starts to grow, and another year before it blooms with some useful insight, that will be fine with me.
It seems to me that a lot of bad decisions are made when someone demand results today. “In every deliberation, we must consider the impact of our decisions on the next seven generations.” – The Iroquois Confederacy
(Of course, we can’t wait 7 generations before making a decision – that would be Wiki:AnalysisParalysis ).
I suspect that ideas are real, groups are real, … and so on.
If my Transhuman friends would start to suspect that God is real, and my Christian friends would start to suspect the good and wonderful and amazing things that will happen in 2007 and 2009 and 5 years from now … well, that would be pretty cool.
