Note: It’s not that we’re not interested in the issues of social hierarchy, or that they are lesser. Rather, just historically speaking, we’ve used “CategoryHierarchy” to label conversations about arrangements of wiki pages. We also talk about social hierarchy, but to a lesser extent.

Abroad, we have: Wiki:CategoryHierarchy, primarily about the use of hierarchy in computer programming, but featuring many of the ideas found here as well.

Hierarchy has some advantages on wiki.

  • If every page must have one or more parent pages then the problem of orphaned/uncategorised pages is reduced.
  • We could have functionality to easily take sections and fork them into a child page.
  • Pages can “float” around and move categories easily.
