ClassicalModelOfInformationRetrieval

The classical model of information retrieval, as described by Marcia Bates1 is as follows.

http://www.gseis.ucla.edu/faculty/bates/images/berrypicking-image002.gif

  1. A "document representation" is generated for each document in a document collection.
  2. A user has an information need.
  3. The user's information need is transformed into a query.
  4. The query is matched against the document representations. This yields a set of matching documents.
