VirtualWorlds are things like MMORPGs, SecondLife, and the proposed DevelopersVirtualWorld. They are not quite VirtualReality because they do not necessarily completely "immerse" the user by substituting all of their sensory input of the external world with sensory input from the simulated world, and the quality of their multimedia is not necessarily such that you would mistake it for "reality" (however, one can imagine that once VirtualReality becomes possible, some parts of the virtual worlds will use it).

Advantages and disadvantages

TODO: move some discussion here from the pages SecondLife and DevelopersVirtualWorld

DoTank also has a description of the advantages of virtual worlds technology.
